Marijuana Set To Be Named 8th Wonder Of The World
Posted on August 19 2016
It’s been a pretty quiet week for little old weed, but news hit us hard and fast last night when we caught wind of the possibility of marijuana becoming the 8th Wonder of the World. The Wonders of the World, of which there are normally seven, traditionally consist of man-made wonders, all originating from the ancient world. The current seven consists of The Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, The Colosseum in Rome, Chichen Itza in Mexico, Machu Picchu in Peru, The Taj Mahal in India and Christ the Redeemer in Brazil with the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt receiving honorary status, making it the current eighth.
The initiative that named these as the Wonders, known as the New7Wonders of the World began in 2000 as a project meant to celebrate the Millennium has since, after its dissolution in 2007, been replaced by the American based ‘NU8’ which was formed in late 2012 as a way to celebrate the end of the controversial Mayan Calendar. NU8 immediately set about reviewing current list members and quickly came to the conclusion that they all represented the old world, so they spent a large portion of time deciding what would best represent the new era.
They decided marijuana would be a great edition to the list, due to its unique properties to both heal and intoxicate, and the joy it brings to many worldwide. Chad Wayne, a spokesperson for NU8, stated, “We looked at the current list and thought ‘yeah pretty cool’ but realised it was missing something that people actually cared about. We looked at each wonder individually and studied them, and discussed the pros and cons,” before further saying, “We all froze when thinking of the pros of the Pyramid, it's full of dead people which just isn’t really cool anymore, it’s kind of a mess in terms of its build, it’s certainly not structurally sound which means we’d have to spend X amount of money renovating it and it’s not like weed, you can’t smoke a pyramid.”
NU8 confirmed weed as a strong choice for Wonder number eight after the recent surge in support and legalizations. The list, in general, has remained relatively unchanged, however, Rome’s Colosseum has been replaced by New York’s Statue of Liberty and Christ the Redeemer gives way to the Eiffel Tower to usher in a brave new list wherein Marijuana sits in the final position, which is no longer merely an honorary position.
