If You Were Anti-Marijuana How Anti-Marijuana Would You Be

I’m sure by now many of you have seen the recent anti-pot effort rising in Massachusetts ahead of the possibility of the state legalizing cannabis. Now the first TV advert has been released, and it’s pretty much what you’d expect, implying that somehow the cannabis industry’s major demographic is children or more specifically your children. Now, nobody wants stoned kids, heck, when I was a stoned teenager, the likelihood is that I was an annoying little shit, probably even to my peers and definitely to my elders. Either way intoxicated kids (12 - 17 maybe) of any kind tend to spread and push their half-formed ideology on those who just don’t care. After all, there's nothing worse than a stoned kid who’s ‘figured it all out’.
I digress, once you remove all the anti-cannabis propaganda from this video, it still falls prey to one fatal flaw, and that is that any child would be at all distracted by sweets whilst on their way into a toy shop. No child ever has been distracted by anything other than the variety of toys in the shop whilst on their way into a toy shop. Literally, if you want to deter children from colorful marijuana-related edibles, then next to a toy shop is going to be the best bet.
The propaganda technique is not a new one, it’s the old Helen Lovejoy ‘will somebody please think of the children’ technique which fails to even consider that many parents are actually capable parents who wouldn’t let their children smoke or take marijuana in any form at such a young age. This is a classic case of American media undervaluing and having low expectations of the skills and abilities of its target audience. It verges on patronisation. It preys on fears people didn’t think they had and causes them to doubt themselves.
