Bud and beer: why society has got it backwards

In the ongoing campaign to legalise cannabis, you will see that often the main thing that stands in the way seems to be the subsiding stigma of marijuana as a drug, something simply used by hippies, musicians and the like in the 60’s merely for the purpose of getting high. While that is one of the uses of marijuana, not something I am condemning, many fail to see the expansive medical possibilities of marijuana. While CBD is the component largely attributed to cannabis’ medical potential, THC, the psychoactive element, also has potential in the field of treating mental illness such as depression and PTSD.
Considering all this, it seems ridiculous that alcohol is widely accepted and cannabis isn’t, not simply in the West but all across the world. Alcohol is a depressant, that is a fact, it is fine in small amounts or infrequently but can become a long term source of dependency for some, used to cope with hardships they may face. It does not take the problems away but merely acts as a brief, short term escape from said issues. It may be all fun and games when you start knocking back a few ‘cold ones’ with your mates, carefree, however, the next morning your problems will merely rear their ugly head once again, often with a vengeance.
On top of this, the morning after a night of drinking, oft-termed a hangover, is hardly a nice state. When plagued with a hangover you are essentially in one of the most vulnerable states emotionally, hardly a time when you want to remember all the problems in your life.
Now, I am not suggesting marijuana is a solution to your problems nor am I simply condemning alcohol for the sake of it, I am merely analysing from my point of view what many fail to realise is quite a problem and comparing it to something which I would consider a lesser problem while many do not.
There is no such thing as a magical substance which can take away your problems in life. The only thing that can do that is you essentially. But alcohol can certainly cause problems. Especially when compared to intoxicants like marijuana. After all I haven’t heard of cannabis tearing families apart or causing people to become violent. Along the same vein marijuana shouldn’t be used as simply a coping mechanism, if you believe it may offer some benefit to your life then by all means I would recommend using it, but in moderation not instead of facing your problems.
