The other weird side-effect of weed
Posted on June 10 2016
We all know smoking marijuana can lead to a dry mouth, or "cotton mouth" as it's more colloquially referred to, but according to new research, it's not the only thing that it could be drying out. And it only affects women. That's right, marijuana might be making your vagina dry.
Not our findings, but the findings of Dr. Julie Holland in her peculiarly titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, The Sleep You’re Missing, The Sex You’re Not Having, and What’s Really Making You Crazy, which explains her reasoning behind the claim.
“[Vaginal dryness is] exactly like dry mouth. It’s the same thing. It’s the drying of the mucus membranes,” Holland says in an interview with VICE. “Now not all pot is going to give you dry mouth, but if you have had a strain that is giving you dry mouth, it will also make you more dry [down there].”
Obviously, with the internet being the internet, it went viral. Internet forums went crazy, twitter erupted with confessions of the newly coined phenomenon.
Urban Dictionary has a page for "cotton vagina", until now it has only been a folkloric claim - a myth. Now the myth has been proven to be correct.
Holland explains: "In general the thing that makes women dry is the pill. Because there's all this different mucus that happens throughout your cervical cycle.
"As Mother Nature designs it, when you're fertile, you're wet. But if you're on the pill, you don't ovulate; you don't get that mid-cycle wetness."
In case you think this might be just one of those things people on the internet say, it's not. Dr. Julie Holland is actually quite an acclaimed American psychopharmacologist, psychiatrist, and author. She's a frequent lecturer, and has appeared as a drug and behavior expert on CNN, National Geographic Channel, Fox, VH1, MTV and Good Morning America. She is a regular guest on The Today Show. So it's on good authority.
Although Holland can tell you how and why it happens, she doesn't actually say what to do if it happens. With cottonmouth you can simply grab a cold beverage to refresh your mouth, sadly I don't think the same is true for this side-effect.
